Sensaphone - another proven manufacturer of aquarium monitoring systems
by: Warren Gibbons

Great article. I have owned and operated a high-end aquarium design/installation/management business for 14 years. And over the years we have come to rely on such monitoring systems.

One we have fallen in love with is by Sensaphone.com. In particular their product model 400 and 800. And recently we have purchased their most comprehensive product, the SCADA 3000, which is capable of monitoring more sensors and is scalable for large numbers of sensors.

The main products we have used over the years are the Sensaphone 400 (4 sensors) and Sensaphone 800 (8 sensors). The thing we have come to love about them is their simplicity of installation and operation, and their reliability. And recently, they upgraded them, so that now you can program your own voice for one of the alarms.

We use the Sensaphone to test for air temperature, water temperature, water flow, water level (hi/low), leaks, and power failure. These are what I refer to as key life support parameters, that if they are allowed to go out of whack, then you end up with big ugly problems such as loss of fishes/corals, damaged equipment, and even damaged property.

The whole attitude is one of prevention, and accomodation. After 14 years of doing this, we know there are only so many problems that can happen, most of which are preventable. But, because we are dealing with human beings here, who make mistakes, we need to be prepared and be notified the instant something is not right.

Every system we have installed a Sensaphone monitoring system on, has been saved from a major loss within the first two years. Thus they pay for themselves within two years.

Yes it is more work and money to install a monitoring system, but a large custom reef tank is not a temporary thing. This is something worth protecting.
